Background

A GA4 audit is essential for uncovering missing insights—key data points that organizations don't yet know and can act upon. A well-done audit evaluates both behavioral tracking and traffic attribution, ensuring each is accurate and useful. It also assesses whether the data collected truly supports business decisions and reporting.

Test Detail

This test identifies when a conversion event is triggering too frequently or disproportionately, leading to suspiciously high conversion rates.

While high conversion rates can happen with niche or returning traffic, they can also indicate duplicate conversions, improperly placed tags, or inflated event counts—skewing performance metrics and misleading your team.

How to Conduct This Test

Basic Tests

  • In Google Analytics > Reports > Engagement > Events, sort by your primary conversion events.
    • Look at the ratio of conversions to users or sessions.
    • Are conversion rates >50%, >75%, or even over 100%?
  • Use Explore to break the event down by:
    • Device category
    • Source/medium
    • Landing page
    • Session ID or user ID (if available)
  • Also check in Admin > Conversions to ensure the correct events are marked as conversions—sometimes the wrong events get promoted.

How To Fix

  • Review how your conversion events are triggered in Google Tag Manager or code.
    • Is the same event firing multiple times per session or page load?
    • Consider adding logic to fire conversions once per session or only on final steps (e.g., form submission instead of button click).
  • Remove or update any irrelevant events marked as conversions in Google Analytics Admin.
  • Hire a pro to help untangle your conversion tracking and give you accurate, trustworthy performance metrics.
